6 Ways To Keep Your Computer Safe

Chris Mudge - Monday, April 30, 2018

Technology has evolved over the years and has become very advanced. This is also the reason why your computer needs to be safer than ever before. It is important that you keep your computer well protected and safe from complex malicious viruses and bugs at all times. It is also important that the latest updates are installed on your computer or device so that you can enjoy being on the Internet without fear. Please take some time to look over the 6 tips below on how to keep your computer safe !

1. Anti-Malware (includes Anti-virus)
This is one of the best ways to protect your computer. This should be an essential installation on any computer. Free Anti-Malware programs are generally not reliable for full security however some versions do supply very good security support such as Sophos. Pro-versions are generally always safe. Again Sophos, Kaspersky or TrendMicro to name a few.
We recommend and support Sophos. Sophos provide protection on you local computer, local mobile device, connect devices, your network and your data in the cloud.

2. Firewall
There are 2 main types of Firewall. The physical hardware Firewall that is the connection of your network to the Internet, and the software firewall that protects the individual computer.
Just like Anti-Malware this is a type of program that runs continuously in the background. Apple Mac & Windows also have their own firewall that work great but these should be set to work through the control panel as on or off. Talk to us regarding settings and whether you should use the computer settings or a professional firewall or router.
Sophos provides a physical hardware device that protects the network and can provide other services like monitoring traffic in and out of your network.
Most domestic and industrial routers have adequate firewall characteristics but not many are configured correctly due to the technical understanding required. Talk to us about configuring your router correctly.
It is essential that your network or computer be correctly configured to protect you against attacks and malicious viruses.

3. Updates
Updates depend on how you are supported. If you do not have an IT professional to support you on an ongoing basis it is better to set updates to automatic so that they are updated continuously.
If you are supported by an IT Professional it is better to turn off your automatic settings and work closely with your IT Professional to ensure these are checked and updated continuously and on time. The reason for this is that it is always better to test the effect of an update should it cause a panic in your system. This way your IT professional is able to get you back on track quickly.
Updates do not only apply to the computer updates. Updates can also apply to network devices, third party applications and your computers and devices. The updates keep both the software and firmware current to fight against attacks and malicious viruses.
Some of the devices to be considered are – your computer (Mac or Windows), Mobile devices (IOS or Android – Phones and tablets), USB sticks, routers, attached drives and many other devices.

4. Browser
You should also update your browser just like your Apple Mac or Windows operating system. Make sure it is updated regularly so that it blocks any suspicious sites.
Recommended Tools:
  • Google Chrome (free)
  • Mozilla Firefox (free)
  • UC Browser (free)
  • Safari

5. Encryption
Even if your computer is stolen then you can still protect your passwords and files through encryption in a secure folder.
Recommended Tools:
  • BitLocker (Windows built-in)
  • Folder Lock (paid)
  • Mac – Filevault
The above, specified ways if followed well can keep your computer protected and safe irrespective of the viruses and bugs being more complicated and advanced than ever before. Thus, make sure that you apply all these to your computer to protect against harmful elements.
But be very careful regarding encryption. Once the mater password is lost so is the data.

6. Accounts
This is also a very important step to be performed. You should have at least an administrator type account that manages your computer while there should be a separate one for working and playing etc. A new one can be made through the User Accounts tool to make a new Administrator account.
The administrator account will also allow you to make repairs to your computer should your personal account become unusable.

Have a great day !
